With Christmas about two weeks away, I just had to post this picture.
This is a local department store and they’ve made a huge CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) mistake. The store has blocked the walkway with merchandise. The question is why? Why did the store place merchandise here? The obvious answer is to make more sales. Christmas is the single greatest buying and selling time for stores and the more products they have on the sales floor the more products they can sell. However, in their effort to increase revenue they’ve made the space less safe. The mistake they have made is called space conflict and it happens in schools all the time.
From what you see in the picture, answer these two questions.
- What is space conflict (or what do you think it means)?
- What unwanted behaviors can we now expect in this space? (Put yourself there as a shopper. Imagine you’re using the space. This technique always helps me to understand what is happening and how to fix it.)
